Alexandria Business Tax Deadlines to Know
Alexandria is an independent city and is not part of Fairfax or Arlington County, so businesses in Alexandria file their local business taxes with the City of Alexandria’s business tax office. The main deadlines are:
- Business license (BPOL): the renewal application and payment are due March 1, or the next business day when March 1 falls on a weekend. The tax is based on gross receipts, not profit.
- Business personal property (furniture, fixtures, machinery and tools, computers and similar assets): the return is due May 1, and the tax is due October 5.
Alexandria’s property rules include a timing detail that surprises many owners: a business that starts operating in the city after January 1 owes no business personal property tax for that year, but a business that moves or closes after January 1 owes the full year, with no proration.
The city offers an online business tax portal for filing and payment. We help clients work out which filings apply, prepare them, and keep track of the dates each year, since local deadlines and rules can change.

Alexandria CPA Questions
Do you work with Alexandria businesses even though your office is in Fairfax?
Yes. We serve businesses throughout Northern Virginia, including Alexandria, from our office in Fairfax. Call us and we will talk through how we would work together.
Is Alexandria’s business license separate from Fairfax County’s?
Yes. Alexandria is an independent city, so businesses there deal with the City of Alexandria rather than a county. Businesses in the city are not subject to the Fairfax County business license tax.
When are Alexandria business filings due?
The business license renewal and payment are due March 1. The business personal property return is due May 1, and the property tax is due October 5.
If my business opened after January 1, do I owe business personal property tax this year?
Not for that year. Alexandria does not charge business personal property tax for a year in which a business begins operating after January 1. A business that moves or closes after January 1 still owes the full year.
What is the difference between a bookkeeper, a CPA and an outsourced CFO?
A bookkeeper records transactions and keeps accounts reconciled day to day. A CPA prepares tax returns, reviews the numbers and advises on compliance and tax strategy. An outsourced CFO looks forward, using budgets, forecasts and cash flow analysis to guide decisions such as hiring, financing and growth.
How do I get started?
Call us or send a message. We start with a conversation about your business and what you need, then recommend the right mix of services.
