Fairfax Business Tax Deadlines to Know

Local tax filings are easy to miss when you are busy running a business. These are the main Fairfax County deadlines for businesses:

  • Business license (BPOL): existing businesses file and pay by March 1. New businesses register within 75 days of starting operations, and late filing can carry a 10% penalty.
  • Business tangible personal property (furniture, equipment, computers and similar assets): the return is due May 1, and payment is due October 5.

Which rules apply depends on where your business is located. Businesses inside the City of Fairfax, and in Falls Church, Alexandria, Clifton, Herndon and Vienna, get their business license from that jurisdiction instead of the county. The City of Fairfax also requires an annual license renewal by March 1.

We help clients sort out which filings apply to them and confirm the dates each year, since local deadlines and rules can change.

Fairfax CPA Questions

What does a CPA firm do for a small business?

A CPA firm keeps your financial records accurate, prepares your financial reports and business tax returns, and helps you plan ahead. Many firms, including ours, also provide bookkeeping and outsourced CFO support so one team can cover the full financial picture.

What is the difference between a bookkeeper, a CPA and an outsourced CFO?

A bookkeeper records transactions and keeps accounts reconciled day to day. A CPA prepares tax returns, reviews the numbers and advises on compliance and tax strategy. An outsourced CFO looks forward, using budgets, forecasts and cash flow analysis to guide decisions such as hiring, financing and growth.

When should a business consider an outsourced CFO?

An outsourced CFO is worth considering when cash flow is tight, margins are shrinking, you are preparing to raise capital or expand, or you need financial guidance but are not ready to hire a full-time CFO.

When are Fairfax County business license and property filings due?

For Fairfax County businesses, the business license (BPOL) is due March 1, the business tangible personal property return is due May 1, and the property tax payment is due October 5. Businesses in the City of Fairfax and certain towns follow their own jurisdiction’s requirements.

Do you work with businesses outside of Fairfax?

Yes. We serve businesses across Northern Virginia, the rest of Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC.

How do I get started?

Call us or send a message. We start with a conversation about your business and what you need, then recommend the right mix of services.
